Evolution, Innovation and Later Career
In later years, Butcher continued to evolve. He experimented with infrared photography, new print technologies, and broader geographic subject matter including Cuba and Spain.
He maintained, however, his commitment to large-format traditions and hands-on darkroom printing—even as many photographers went digital.
In 2017 he suffered a stroke but returned to photography shortly afterward, viewing his recovery as intertwined with nature’s resilience. His work continued to emphasize the interplay of solitude, wilderness, and human reflection. shutdown123
